Valley West Coast Swing

It all started when…

Bonny Branch of Roanoke Westies and I decided to make some lemonade from the giant lemon that was the shut down in the spring of 2020 due to COVID-19. Dance communities could no longer gather together in person, so we had to get creative. We joined the two valleys, Roanoke Valley and New River Valley, for online West Coast Swing classes and continued to move, learn, and find joy together; we called ourselves Valley West Coast Swing (VWCS). Once dance floors began opening up and in-person classes resumed, we decided this collaboration was too good not to continue. Bonny and I started working together to develop our classes and host larger events to bring outside instruction into the community. In the summer of 2024, we reached out to dancers to see what they sought from the West Coast Swing community and us as organizers. Their feedback and support have been instrumental in shaping VWCS. Now, we have a group of ambassadors helping plan, host, and spread the good word about West Coast Swing!

Our Mission

VWCS seeks to create and grow a joyful, accessible, inclusive West Coast Swing dance community that supports social connection and opportunities for individuals to grow their dance in the New River and Roanoke Valleys.

Our Vision

We plan to carry out our mission by hosting classes, social dances, and special events in our area, promoting local and regional learning opportunities, and organizing trips to out-of-town events. We also seek to make West Coast Swing more accessible by offering scholarships and trying to reach diverse and marginalized communities.

Code of Conduct

A safe and welcoming space is a priority, so please read the code of conduct before attending a VWCS event.

How To Get Involved

First, come and dance with us! We have a monthly social dance that alternates between locations in the New River Valley (Blacksburg) and the Roanoke Valley. Information is on my calendar and on Facebook and Instagram, @valleywcswing. We can also guide you to beginner classes throughout the valleys.

Also, we are always looking for enthusiastic West Coast Swing fans who want to help us with our mission. We have opportunities to volunteer at events (usually for free admission) and meet as a group several times a year to plan events. Reach out and let us know how you would like to be involved.

Scholarships

VWCS would love to help you start or continue your journey with dance. If you or someone you know has a financial barrier holding them back, please get in touch with us about a scholarship. Scholarships could go toward group classes in Blacksburg and Roanoke and our monthly social.
